Welcome to the Teachers for Virtual Choice Room for Debate

The Teachers for Virtual Choice Room for Debate is an online space online feature that invites knowledgeable outside contributors to discuss news events and other timely issues related to appropriately choosing and using digital technologies in P-12 settings. Unlike many spaces dedicated to opinions on educational issues, contributors in the TVC Room for Debate are expert teachers who best know the realities of classroom practice and P-12 students' needs to be problem solvers, information users, community participants, knowledgeable, literate across a variety of media, and ethical decision makers.

Videos, Blogs, and Podcasts in Education

Videos in the Classroom by Angie Hunt      Who doesn’t like to watch a video especially during school?  Education has tried to use video technology since 1925 , and it appears that it should continue to be integrated in the classroom.  As a teacher librarian who uses video with just about any lesson, I see students retain more information, understand concepts more rapidly and are more enthusiastic about what they are learning. With video as one component in a thoughtful lesson plan, students often make new connections between curriculum topics and discover links between these topics and the world outside the classroom.      On a recent blog post of We Are Teachers discussing The headline, “Why We’re Teaching Reading Comprehension in a Way That Doesn’t Work,” raised some hackles, but the premise is a sound one. Knowing more about a topic makes reading about it easier.  The post listed 21 ways to build background knowledge and 5 of the...

Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts in Education by Team Saffron

The introduction of blogs, wikis, podcasts, videos and technology in general are a must in education today. Students are communicating and collaborating with peers using instant messenger, text messaging, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, etc. everyday out of school. However, it is also widely acknowledged that there are serious negative implications to overexposure to screen time for children . So how do we balance these two opposite truths in schools? One tool that most people are already using and can influence collaboration and literacy are blogs. Blogs have opened up the read/write content creation on the web and over 180 million people are  usi...

Ponderings from Periwinkle (Take 2)

Teachers are passionate about being the best educators they can be for their students. Most teachers would probably also consider themselves “rule followers.” Combine these ideas with the traditional programs still in place for teacher  preparation  ( in the  2013 National Council on Teacher Quality review of Teacher Preparation Programs , technology integration is barely mentioned: "It takes about two years of research to develop a new standard. Among the areas in which we continue to search for consensus are: ... Use of technology in instruction, including blended learning" ) and traditional curriculum mandates, and we have frustrated teachers following a failing recipe for students’ futures. In order to meet their given job descriptions, teachers are unable to design appropriate learning experiences. At best, many are painfully aware they are failing their students. At worst, some blame technology and “society” for making their jobs impossible. The educational system...
